Charter of his Duties.
ANF India has set up an ‘open sky’ Environmental Education Centre facility and is looking for volunteer faculties of environment, biology, astronomy and human art of living. The volunteers would serve as a guardian of native biotic and cultural resources.
Its major aim is to enhance the public's (villagers, schools and visitors) appreciation and sense of responsibility towards environment to raise public awareness and understanding of tigers and the conservation of their habitat. For furtherance of mission they would pay often visit in nearby school and conduct competitions on wildlife art among the children and villager to create public awareness and understanding of tigers and the conservation of their habitat.
In addition, Volunteers would get the opportunity to work on the following significant projects running with Open Sky Environmental Education Centre.
Visitor Centre: open daily, featuring exhibits of nature and wildlife art, photographs from ANF and from local villagers
Resource Centre: reference and loan library with conservation resources applicable to the wider Bandhavgarh region.
Interpretive Audio: video on wildlife and nature conservation.
The centre will also promote and facilitate in the following fields:
Free access workshops for the local people and school children.
Act as a meeting place for local craftsmen, women and school children.
Act as a base for ANF artists, who will arrange free workshops for local artists and paying guests whenever possible.
As the Open Sky Environmental Education Centre is established in premises of an Eco-Lodge, this lodge will be developed and used as meeting point for ‘serious’ eco-tourists visiting the park. After an introduction, they would be guided through the park by Volunteers running the centre who by virtue of his existence gathered a great local knowledge.
As the Environmental Education Centre is one the parts of Eco-lodge the volunteers running the centre are to ensure that centre has minimal environmental impact and its operation should not affect the tiger habitat in any way. Volunteers are to ensure that the following technologies are applied with and promoted at their own lodge and also for the local community in subsequent efforts :
Cooking and water heating by means of solar energy
Use of parabolic box cookers
Water treatment by means of a helophyte filter
The creation of an organic kitchen garden, where fresh vegetables and herbs can be grown for immediate use
Composting by means of worms and organic fertilizers, in order to recycle all biodegradable kitchen waste and refuse from the lodge
Nowadays most villagers burn the ground and apply chemical fertilizers as well as insecticides and pesticides, which can result in poisoning saprophytic birds as vultures. Even water holes, used by tigers and many other wild animals, showed high levels of pesticides! Demonstrating the cheap and useful application of bio-fertilizers will hopefully convince people of a clean and cheap alternative.
Creation of a demo nursery and garden with medicinal, aromatic, special and useful plants, as well as a research centre (project HAMP). HAMP stands for Herbal Aromatic and Medicinal Plants.
Often wild animals like sambar, spotted deer and wild boars raid wheat and rice fields located near the Tiger Reserves and destroy the crop of farmers. Tigers and leopards generally haunt these animals and instead kill livestock. The Volunteers are to guide the local farmers to grow medicinal plants which are not attracting the wild animals but are beneficial and useful to humans. This would reduce confrontation of locals and wildlife and further reducing the risk to tigers especially.
